Responsibilities
- examines drawings and specifications to determine job requirements
- selects and measures appropriate wood and cuts, shapes and drills to specification using saws, planes, chisels and other power or hand tools
- aligns and fixes prepared wood pieces by screwing, nailing, glueing and dowelling to form frames, shop fronts, counter units, decking, theatrical sets, furniture, small wooden craft, scale models and wooden templates
- checks accuracy of work with square, rule and spirit level
- maintains and repairs woodwork and fittings
- Measure, cut, and shape wood, plastic, fibreglass, or drywall using hand and power tools such as saws, chisels, planes, drills, and sanders
- Install structures and fixtures such as windows, doors, cabinets, counters, and moulding
- Read and interpret blueprints, sketches, and building plans to understand project requirements
- Select and procure materials needed for construction projects, ensuring appropriate quality and quantity
- Construct frameworks, including walls, floors, and roofs, according to specifications
- Inspect and repair damaged structures or fixtures
- Collaborate with other construction professionals, such as architects, engineers, and plumbers, to ensure projects meet safety and design requirements
- Maintain tools and equipment in good condition, performing routine maintenance as needed
- Adhere to safety protocols and regulations at all times to prevent accidents and injuries
- Estimate project costs, timeframes, and material requirements accurately
