Our market-leading, proprietary technology will enable our partners to win in their markets, develop a competitive advantage and offer an unparalleled customer proposition.  Our mission is simple — to change the way the world shops for good.  Our heritage as the UK’s largest pure-play online grocer through Ocado Retail LTD ( a 50:50 joint venture with M&S), and expertise in high-performing logistics and fulfilment through Ocado Logistics, has equipped us with technology innovation, expertise and operational know-how to build and innovate the Ocado Smart Platform (OSP). OSP is the world’s leading ecommerce, fulfilment and logistics platform designed for the unique demands of online grocery.  Now, with Ocado Intelligent Automation (OIA), our unparalleled experience and proven automated retrieval and storage technology is helping businesses outside of online grocery future-proof their fulfilment operations.

Responsibilities

Skills used at work

Our teams are putting the world's retailers online using the cloud, robotics, AI, and IoT. We provide services to partner clients globally via our innovative advanced robotics technology, known as the Ocado Smart Platform ("OSP"), this drives our highly automated, multi-million pound Customer Fulfilment Centres (CFCs). In our CFCs - together with the proprietary software applications - we operate a world-class online grocery business that automates the single pick of products, ready for your online delivery.

Our Automated Storage & Retrieval Systems (ASRS) teams are at the forefront of our technology engineering enterprise. We specialise in designing, manufacturing, and delivering cutting-edge products to our Customer Fulfilment Centres (CFCs) worldwide. Our custom electrical and mechanical development projects are advancing the frontiers of innovation and automation.

Within the ASRS department, we have our Grid development teams. These teams are dedicated to creating innovative, reliable products that align with our clients' and customers' diverse needs.

As a Senior Structural Engineer, you will perform complex simulations and analysis of the ASRS's physical storage infrastructure to predict failure modes against specific load cases. Typical types of analysis are static load, dynamic load, fatigue load, and other cases like crack and damage tolerance analysis. You will use your experience and collaboration skills to resolve or mitigate those failure modes with the Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineers within the team. You will perform up-front conceptual de-risking and detailed analysis using an appropriate mix of hand calculations and Comsol (Multiphysics FE tool). You will lead the internal capability improvement for structural engineering and stress analysis to enable us to both move faster and develop higher quality storage infrastructure.

    • Develop internal modelling and analysis tools that reduce the effort for development iteration
    • Work in partnership with global SMEs to quickly problem solve across a product's load combinations and regional constraints
    • Prepare reports and design changes.
    • Make calculations about pressures, loads, stresses and fatigue.
    • Consider the strength of construction materials and select appropriately.
    • Provide technical advice on safe designs and construction.
    • Analyse configurations of the basic components of a structure.
    • Communicate solutions and designs to varying levels of seniority in both technical and non-technical audiences
