    JOB TITLE: Applied Sciences Principal Engineer

    SALARY: £100k - £129k (dependent on location & experience)

    LOCATIONS: Bristol / London / Edinburgh / Chester / Cardiff / Flexible

    HOURS: Full-Time

    WORKING PATTERN: Our work style is hybrid, which involves spending at least two days per week, or 40% of our time, at one of our office sites

    Applied Sciences is an exciting new team within Portfolio Analytics, Digital Banking which delivers AI, Machine Learning, Analytics and Innovation to the heart of Business & Commercial Banking. We accelerate the digitisation of our division, enabling its agenda to support UK businesses to grow sustainably and be the engine room of our economy.

    Our Applied Sciences team is looking for a Principal Engineer/Engineering Lead who can lead a team of Data and Machine Learning Engineers to design, develop, and deploy engaging data products and services.

    You'll coordinate the entire lifecycle of data projects, from concept to production, and ensuring that they meet the highest standards of quality, performance, and reliability. You'll also collaborate with our Research, Data Science and Analytics teams to understand their data needs and deliver solutions that bring value and impact for customers and colleagues. This will mean leveraging Google Cloud Platform capabilities, but also involve operating across our various cloud environments and legacy data stores. This role will contribute to build enduring capability with the appropriate guardrails.

    What You'll Need

    Experience/Knowledge:

    • Consistent track record as a Principal Engineer/Engineering Lead in a similar role. Experience implementing and supporting Machine Learning (ML) systems including automation, model training, validation and monitoring.
    • ML techniques covering application of diverse algorithms, ensemble, reinforcement learning and familiarity with key ML libraries and frameworks.
    • Solid understanding of data engineering and data science principles and practices, such as data modelling, data pipelines, data quality, data analysis.
    • Software engineering practices, including unit and integration testing, as well as CI/CD pipelines.
    • Industry Awareness: Awareness of the latest industry technical developments, emerging trends, new technologies, and for AI.

    Tools and Technologies:

    • Expertise in cloud computing platforms, especially Google Cloud Platform (GCP)
    • Proficiency in data warehousing and database technologies, such as Teradata, Hadoop and MSSQL
    • Experience in containerization and orchestration tools, such as Kubernetes, Docker, and Kafka
    • Good knowledge of Python and ability to write modular Python code as well as familiarity with data structures.

    • Leadership: Strong interpersonal and leadership skills with a passion for crafting a culture of innovation and continuous learning.
    • Effective Communication: Excellent communication and ability to present and connect with both technical and non-technical audiences.
    • You'll be a self-starter with a passion for developing Data Science & Analytics solutions that solve ambitious business problems and transform our ability to digitise our business with new technologies.
